I always say you shouldn't go to Web sites you don't trust, but what if you're not sure if you can trust a certain site or not? What do you do then? This type of problem is pretty common and in the past, it has left me wondering what to do. Well, today, I have a very easy answer to that question!

The answer is a service by Google called Google Safe Browsing Diagnostic. With this tool, you can type a Web address into your browser's address bar and get a report from Google, telling you whether the site is safe or not.

Here's how you do it:

First, you will need this address: http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=www.worldstart.com

The address above is what you can use to get a report. If you copy the exact address from above and paste it into your Web browser, you will get a report about www.worldstart.com that looks like this:

Pretty neat, huh?! Now, that's great for seeing a report about WorldStart, but you already know we're safe, so what about a report for another Web site?

To see a report about any other site, simply use the exact same address as above, but change the end of it. See the part at the end that says “www.worldstart.com?” Just erase that and type in any other Web address. For example, if you changed it to: http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=www.aol.com, you would get a report for AOL's safety rating.

The Google Safe Browsing Diagnostic is very nice to use for checking a Web site before you visit it. If you want, you can bookmark it and use it whenever you need it. Until next time, stay safe out there, my friends!

Reduce PC Bootup Time using MSConfig

Does your PC take a long time to boot? Do you always have to wait and stare at the screen while all the start-up applications load? Does the long wait bother you and do u wish you could make it faster? MSConfig is a nifty Windows tool which allows you to do exactly this as described below.

MSConfig stands for Microsoft System Configuration Utility (known as System Configuration in Windows Vista) and is a tool which is present in Windows 98, XP and Vista. Windows 2000 users can download and use this tool, if required.

Note: Windows 95 users are not considered here, as the operating system is hardly in use. However, they can also download and try the tool at their own risk.

How to Access the MSConfig Window

The MSConfig Window can be opened by navigating to the Run menu (Start >Run) and typing “msconfig”.

There are 5 tabs in the MSConfig utility and they are discussed in detail below

The General Tab

The screenshot shown below indicates the general tab. It gives you a choice of 3 options

- Normal Startup: Used when the system is behaving as expected.
- Diagnostic Startup: Used to troubleshoot when the system is not behaving as expected.
- Selective Startup: Used in order to selectively load System Services & Startup Items

The Boot Tab

The screenshot shown below indicates the Boot tab.

It lists the various operating systems which have currently been installed and provides the ability to tweak various boot settings etc. Options such as Safe Boot, a Boot Log, the timeout delay (for a list of OS’s) etc can be modified here. Beginners should approach this section with caution, and avoid changing anything unnecessarily.

The Services Tab

The screenshot shown below indicates the Services tab.

The table lists the various services which have been installed currently and denotes the status of each service (Running, Stopped etc.) Select any service and click on Enable or Disable as appropriate. The “Hide all Microsoft services” checkbox can be used to prevent tampering with system services unnecessarily. This tab can be used to prevent unnecessary services from running in the background and consuming critical memory resources.

The Startup Tab

The screenshot shown below indicates the Startup tab.

This tab indicates the various applications which have been configured to load at start-up. This primarily includes applications which run in the System Tray and in the background. Certain common applications are the Winamp Agent, WinZip, QuickTime Player, Yahoo/Gtalk/MSN Messengers, Windows Sidebar, Antivirus/Spyware Scanners etc. One can enable or disable applications from loading at start-up as required.

The Tools Tab

The screenshot shown below indicates the Tools tab.

This can be used as a launch-pad to launch various tools within Windows such as System Information, Programs, System Restore etc.

Step-By-Step Process to Reduce Bootup Time

Warning: This should only be attempted by a professional. If you have any concerns, contact you resident guru before you begin! Worldstart will not be held liable for any damage done to your PC from these next steps.

- Identify list of services which need to run necessarily at start-up

- Identify list of start-up applications which are required. Keep this to as small a number as possible. [Only the essentials should be retained]

- Open MSConfig from Run menu

- Click on the Services Tab and Disable all the services which are not required. Ensure that the “Hide all Microsoft Services” checkbox is ticked as a safety measure.

- Click on the Start-up Tab and Disable all the applications which are not required to be loaded at start-up.

- Click on OK.

- When prompted to restart the machine, close all applications and restart Windows.

- The start-up time should be reduced. The magnitude of the reduction depends upon the number of start-up applications and the services which have been disabled and the relative load of each of these upon the system.

- In case any of the disabled services/applications are required at start-up, run MSConfig again, make the necessary changes and restart the system again.

- As a safety precaution, make a note of the services and applications being disabled so that it helps you troubleshoot in the case of an error.

- Periodically monitor the number of start-up applications and services to ensure that memory is not being blocked by unnecessary applications.

Advantages of using MSConfig

- MSConfig offers a simpler graphical interface to make changes to the System Configuration without having to manually edit the Registry, Boot.INI or AutoRun.INI files.

- The diagnostic mode is especially helpful in the event of system errors for troubleshooting purposes

SIGNS OF COMPUTER INFECTION

You all know there are millions of malware infections out there today. It seems as if there are tons of new infections that pop up everyday. In the past, I've written about how antivirus software and anti-spyware software don't always find all of the infections on your computer. After writing that article, I received several e-mails asking, "How do I know if I have a virus?" Well, today, I will cover some of the signs your computer will show if it's possibly infected with a virus or some other type of malware.

1.) Your computer slows down majorly. If your system slows down drastically, you may have an infection. Viruses and adware use resources on your computer. They can destroy files, send spam e-mail, redirect your browser and many other things that will slow your computer down.

2.) Internet browser crash. If your Internet browser stops working or shuts down often, you may be infected. Since most malware programs use the Internet to spread themselves, they will affect the performance of your browser. If your Internet browser just starts closing with no warning, you need to check for viruses.

3.) Random e-mails. Many viruses spread through e-mail. If you use an e-mail client, such as Outlook Express, MS Outlook or Thunderbird, a virus could infect it and start sending spam e-mail out to all your contacts. If you start to receive strange e-mails like "Message Undeliverable" or "Mailer Deamon," a virus may be sending e-mail with your address.

4.) Error messages at startup. If you start receiving error messages when you turn your computer on, you may have some type of malware infection. Malware programs usually turn on at startup and they sometimes cause errors, so you need to keep an eye out for that.

5.) Things look "strange." I know that seems a little vague, but sometimes you open something and it just looks funny. If you didn't install something or make a change to your system, there's no reason why something would change. Computers don't make decisions on their own. If something has changed and you didn't initiate it, you should scan for viruses and malware.

Those are the five most common signs of an infection. Many of them may indicate a virus, but that doesn't necessarily mean you're infected.

Some of the signs could indicate a hardware issue or a program conflict. As a general rule, if you know of a recent change that caused the actions, it's probably not a virus. If the signs happen for no reason at all, you should be concerned and get your computer checked. Until next time, stay safe out there, my friends!

CAVITE CITY, Philippines (CNN) -- At 16, Rhandolf Fajardo reflects on his former life as a gang member.

Efren Peñaflorida's Dynamic Teen Company offers Filipino youth an alternative to gangs through education.

"My gang mates were the most influential thing in my life," says Fajardo, who joined a gang when he was in sixth grade. "We were pressured to join."
He's not alone. In the Philippines, teenage membership in urban gangs has surged to an estimated 130,000 in the past 10 years, according to the Preda Foundation, a local human rights charity.
"I thought I'd get stuck in that situation and that my life would never improve," recalls Fajardo. "I would probably be in jail right now, most likely a drug addict -- if I hadn't met Efren."
Efren Peñaflorida, 28, also was bullied by gangs in high school. Today, he offers Filipino youth an alternative to gang membership through education. Vote now for the CNN Hero of the Year
"Gang members are groomed in the slums as early as 9 years old," says Peñaflorida. "They are all victims of poverty."
For the past 12 years, Peñaflorida and his team of teen volunteers have taught basic reading and writing to children living on the streets. Their main tool: A pushcart classroom.
Stocked with books, pens, tables and chairs, his Dynamic Teen Company recreates a school setting in unconventional locations such as the cemetery and municipal trash dump.
Peñaflorida knows firsthand the adversity faced by these children. Born into a poor family, he lived in a shanty near the city dump site. But he says he refused to allow his circumstances to define his future.
"Instead of being discouraged, I promised myself that I would pursue education," he recalls. "I will strive hard; I will do my best."

In high school, Peñaflorida faced a new set of challenges. Gang activity was rampant; they terrorized the student body, vandalized the school and inducted members by forcing them to rape young girls, he says.
"I felt the social discrimination. I was afraid to walk down the street."
Peñaflorida remembers standing up to a gang leader, refusing to join his gang. That confrontation proved fateful. At 16, he and his friends "got the idea to divert teenagers like us to be productive," he says.
He created the Dynamic Teen Company to offer his classmates an outlet to lift up themselves and their community. For Peñaflorida, that meant returning to the slums of his childhood to give kids the education he felt they deserved.
"They need education to be successful in life. It's just giving them what others gave to me," he says.
Today, children ranging from ages 2 to 14 flock to the pushcart every Saturday to learn reading, writing, arithmetic and English from Peñaflorida and his trained teen volunteers. Watch Peñaflorida and his group in action with their push cart classroom »
"Our volunteers serve as an inspiration to other children," he says.
The group also runs a hygiene clinic, where children can get a bath and learn how to brush their teeth.

Through his group, Peñaflorida has successfully mentored former gang members, addicts and dropouts, seeing potential where others see problems.

Today, Advincula is a senior in high school and one of the group's volunteers.
Peñaflorida hopes to expand the pushcart to other areas, giving more children the chance to learn and stay out of gangs.

Need for Speed: Underground 2 (NFSU2) is a cross-platform racing video game published and developed by Electronic Arts. Released in 2004, it is the sequel to Need for Speed: Underground, and is part of the Need for Speed series, available on GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance and Windows. Sunday, October 18, 2009, It's a stressful day for me, despite of this I managed to go to Pili just to fix a messing computer, when I was already there I thought that it was totally down as what the owner told me but it's the opposite. It's running and still up, the only thing is that the computer is running slow and there are some files missing in the documents folder but I figured it out that the files were just misplaced to other location. What I only did was to improved the appearance, delete some temporary files and unneeded files.

Windows 7 (formerly codenamed Blackcomb and Vienna) is the latest version of Microsoft Windows, a series of operating systems produced by Microsoft for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, netbooks, tablet PCs and media center PCs. Windows 7 was released to manufacturing on July 22, 2009, with general retail availability set for October 22, 2009,less than three years after the release of its predecessor, Windows Vista. Windows 7's server counterpart, Windows Server 2008 R2, is slated for release about the same time.

Unlike its predecessor, which introduced a large number of new features, Windows 7 is intended to be a more focused, incremental upgrade to the Windows line, with the goal of being fully compatible with applications and hardware with which Windows Vista is already compatible. Presentations given by Microsoft in 2008 focused on multi-touch support, a redesigned Windows Shell with a new taskbar, a home networking system called HomeGroup, and performance improvements. Some applications that have been included with prior releases of Microsoft Windows, including Windows Calendar, Windows Mail, Windows Movie Maker, and Windows Photo Gallery, will not be included in Windows 7;some will instead be offered separately as part of the free Windows Live Essentials suite.

Goals

Bill Gates, in an interview with Newsweek, suggested that the next version of Windows would "be more user-centric". Gates later said that Windows 7 will also focus on performance improvements. Steven Sinofsky later expanded on this point, explaining in the Engineering Windows 7 blog that the company was using a variety of new tracing tools to measure the performance of many areas of the operating system on an ongoing basis, to help locate inefficient code paths and to help prevent performance regressions.

Senior Vice President Bill Veghte stated that Windows Vista users migrating to Windows 7 would not find the kind of device compatibility issues they encountered migrating from Windows XP. Speaking about Windows 7 on October 16, 2008, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer confirmed compatibility between Vista and Windows 7, indicating that Windows 7 will be a refined version of Windows Vista.

Hardware requirements

Microsoft has published their minimum specifications for a system running Windows 7. Requirements for the 32-bit version are much the same as recommendations for premium editions of Vista, but the 64-bit versions are considerably higher. Microsoft has released a beta version of an upgrade advisor that scans a computer to see if it is compatible with Windows 7.

Additional requirements to use certain features:

BitLocker requires Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 1.2 to fully function and requires a USB flash drive to use BitLocker To Go. However, BitLocker may be used (with some loss of functionality) without a TPM if the computer is able to read from a USB flash drive during boot time.
Windows XP Mode requires an additional 1 GB of RAM, an additional 15 GB of available hard disk space, and a processor capable of hardware virtualization with Intel VT or AMD-V enabled.

ISSUE: "All the files and folders stored in my usb flash drive was gone"
COMMON CAUSE: USB flash drive was infected by a computer virus.

While doing some stuff with what they call batch file, I accidentally thought of something....
And it's about how to make a batch file that can unhide files and folders...

Here I will show how to make a batch file that can unhide files and folders on your usb flash disk, or memory stick...

Before anything else, first i would want to clarify that this guide is just an experimental project, any problem such as data loss or anything caused by this project is your sole responsibility. It is advisable to have first a backup of all the important data in your workstation..

Steps:

1.) Open notepad: Start>Run> type Notepad

2.) Copy this code to your notepad:

        attrib -r -a -s -h *.* /s /d
        PAUSE

      NOTE: i: here is the usb flash drive letter,, this i: may vary depending to the drive letter of your usb flash.

3.) After that save now your file.
NOTE: Follow this path in saving: File>Save as>then type usbunhidder.bat>click save.

4.) Now you have your batch file. Once you double click it, all hidden files and folders on your flash disk will be unhidden. it may look like this:

What is this about?

To keep the introduction short, Microsoft denies that booting Windows off a USB drive works.
See this page for example. It says:

Q: Can a USB storage device be the primary (and only) means of storage?
No. USB-based mass storage devices cannot be the primary hard disk storage solution on a regular system ...

Or this one from the microsoft newsgroups:

Windows cannot boot from an USB drive. If your computer supports
booting from such device, you can load a boot loader to the USB device
which starts Windows XP from the HDD.

Anyway, the web is full of those. I was wondering about the same thing, as i did not want to put a Windows partition on my Linux.based work laptop, and thought it was a good idea to run Windows XP off a USB Hard drive that i just plug in when i need it, and boot from it. To put a long story short, this is exactly what i do now, thanks to the fantastic research of the people credited below. However, it took me significant time to figure out all the painful little problems, and i was not fully happy with the current official guide by Dietmar (no pun, he was the first to make ANYthing public). I wanted an easy guide that allows creating a modified version of the Windows XP CD, for painless and transparent installation to as many systems as you want.

I will not assume ANY responsibility for the correctness of this guide, nor can I be made liable for any errors, hardware or software problems / loss that are caused by following this guide. Basically, if things screw up, its your own fault. Do not follow the guide if you fear data loss.

Requirements

An existing Windows install for carrying out the steps in this tutorial
A USB2-compliant Hard disk drive (or a big USB2 stick, see remarks below)
An original Windows XP CD (tested only against SP1 so far, but reported to work on other versions)
A registered version of WinISO (or any other software that allows direct editing of ISO files)
The Microsoft CAB SDK
A CD-burning software that can handle ISO files. I like the free burnatonce

How To:

Summary:
We will dump the contents of your original Windows XP CD , extract a few files from the Image using ISO modification software, edit the files, and put the modified versions back on the ISO. The resulting ISO image is burnt back onto a CD media, and can then directly be used to install Windows on your USB drive.

I am also covering a few pitfalls that happened to me, in hope they will save you a bit of time.

1) Does your computer support booting from USB?

Usually, if its an option in your BIOS boot sequence menu, the answer to this is yes. If its not there, look for BIOS updates. If you are not sure, proceed and see what happens ;-)

2) Sorting out the "Bootability" of your USB-Drive

Connect your USB drive to your computer, directly, without a Hub. Then, shut down your computer, disconnect any other hard disk drives from it, and insert your original Windows XP CD into the drive. Start the installation, and proceed to the section where you are allowed to pick a hard drive. If it goes beyond the partition selection, your drive is already fine for booting Windows XP. If not (seems to be the cases with many of the Freecom USB HDDs for example), you will get an error like "Windows is unable to find your drive, partition, data etc bla". This is usually not a big problem. All you need to do is "properly" format the drive. Reboot into your normal Windows, and get this HP tool , and use it to format your HDD completely. I chose NTFS format, worked fine everytime i tried. After this, my drives are recognized as valid installation devices by the Windows XP installer.
(In fact, i did not manage to create a USB primary partition with FAT32 that was recognized as being installable)

3) Dumping the original Windows CD into an ISO File

Pretty easy one. Simply open WinISO, and select Actions -> Make ISO from CDROM, and save your CD image.

4) Extracting the files we need to work on

After the CD dump is done, close and reopen WinISO. Then, open the ISO file you just created using File -> Open.
Now, click the I386 folder, and select the following files (Ctrl key to multi-select)

TXTSETUP.SIF
DOSNET.INF
USB.IN_
USBPORT.IN_
USBSTOR.IN_
Select Actions -> Extract and put the resulting files into some folder to work on them.

5) Unpacking IN_ files

Use the Cab SDK (from the command line) for extracting the contents of the .IN_ files. Each of them contains exactly one .inf file. If you are unsure how to use the Cab SDK, here is an example command line: "cabarc x USBSTOR.IN_" . You should end up with three new files in the folder, called:
usb.inf
usbport.inf
usbstor.inf
You can now delete the .IN_ files.

6) Editing the files

This is the main job. i ll also try to explain a bit whats happening. Use a simple Texteditor like Notepad.

6-A) TXTSETUP.SIF

This file is loaded on the initial install step by the Windows XP CD installer. In this file, we will change the way Windows treats USB devices during system setup -- the default is to only treat them as input devices during installation -- we will change this to include mass storage driver support (which needs to be loaded into the installer much earlier in order to work).

First, move the following entries from [InputDevicesSupport.Load] to the [BootBusExtenders.Load] section , as shown here

Next, we also have to write several keys into the registry. Convieniently, the txtsetup.sif allows you to specify files that are parsed and instered into the registry at install time. Insert the following in the [HiveInfs.Fresh] section:

7) Repack the inf files into their original IN_ format

If you have not already deleted your extracted .IN_ files, do so now. They need to be replaced. Open a DOS shell again, and navigate to the folder with your changed files. Then exceute the following commands:
cabarc n USB.IN_ usb.inf
cabarc n USBPORT.IN_ usbport.inf
cabarc n USBSTOR.IN_ usbstor.inf
The three IN_ files should now exist again.

Congratulations. All out modifications are done.

8) Inject the changed files into the ISO

Open your Windows CD image again with WinISO. Navigate to the I386 folder, and delete the following files from the ISO, saving the changes to the ISO afterwards:
DOSNET.INF
TXTSETUP.SIF
USB.IN_
USBPORT.IN_
USBSTOR.IN_
Just to be sure all is updated in the ISO, cloase and repoen the ISO in WinISO. Now, again go to the I386 folder and select "Add Files". Now add your changed files, in detail:

DOSNET.INF
TXTSETUP.SIF
USB.IN_
USBPORT.IN_
USBSTOR.IN_
Save the ISO. You are done.

9) Burn the ISO back to CD

Feel free to use any burning package you want. I used the free and simple Burnatonce

10) Install Windows XP from the CD

Shut down your computer. Disconnect ANY internal and external hard drives (so Windows cannot find them during installation and mess up their Master Boot Records hehe). Some computers will have trouble to boot without an internal HDD attached, check in your BIOS and, if possible, remove the HDD from the boot sequence and set the USB Harddisk as the first boot device, and the CDROM as second.

Also, now connect your USB Harddrive directly to the computer, without any Hubs in between.

Windows should install just fine, with the exceptions noted below.
Issues you will encounter during installation:
During driver installation, the USB drivers will prompt you, as they are "not certified" - This is normal. Our changes invalidated the checksum, and therefore the driver is no longer signed. Just press "yes" a couple of times.
Upon completion of the install, the system will complain once on the first bootup that the pagefile does not exist. You can ignore this for now, as Windows will work fine without it. People are looking at fixing this issue, but its not critical for now.

Once everything is up and running , shut down and reconnect all your drives.
